No. The screening is non-invasive and completely painless. It involves visual inspection and gentle palpation of the head, neck, and oral tissues.

We recommend screenings at least once a year for all adults, and twice yearly for patients with elevated risk factors. Screenings are included in our comprehensive dental exams.

Symptoms may include persistent mouth sores, red or white patches, unexplained bleeding, difficulty swallowing, chronic sore throat, or changes in voice. However, many cases present without symptoms, which is why screenings are so important.
Can young adults develop oral cancer?
Yes. While risk increases with age, younger adults, especially those with HPV, can develop oral or throat cancers. This makes early and consistent screening important for all adults.
